Touching God’s Heart

After the death of king Solomon, his son, Rehoboam reigned. For three years he “walked in the way of David and Solomon,” (2 Chron. 11:17), and his kingdom was strengthened. Then, with the kingdom strengthened, and himself strengthened on the throne, “he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.” (2 Chron. 12:1)

God sent Shishak, king of Egypt, to invade Judah. He took all of the fenced cities as he approached Jerusalem. The prophet, Shemaiah, told him that because they have forsaken the LORD, so He has forsaken them, and left them in the hand of the Egyptians to destroy them.

The response of Rehoboam and the princes of Judah touched God’s heart, for “the princes of Israel and the king humbled themselves; and they said, The LORD is righteous.” (2 Chron. 12:6). Because of their humility, and declaring their punishment from God to be righteous, God granted them some deliverance, so that though Jerusalem was spoiled of its treasures, the lives of the people were spared.

Ecclesiastes 7:20 reminds us that, “For there is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good, and sinneth not.” Sin demands judgement, for “The wages of sin is death,” but genuine repentance, confession of sins, and humility of the offender goes straight to the heart of God, and calls down His mercy, which “endureth forever.”

The Name, Christian

About a quarter of the world’s population regard themselves as Christians. The world’s view seems to be that if a person is not committed to another belief, and he is affiliated with some church, then he may be regarded as a Christian. To them, Christian is just a title, having little meaning. In the Bible, […]
